With growing tension between the North Korean and South Korean governments, the South Korean military aims to intensify its Psy-Ops operation against the North Korean regime. Despite being under critique by Cheong Wa Dae (The blue House), the operations are starting up again after having been shut down in 2004.

The operation is starting up in response to two soldiers losing limbs over a landmine attack in  August 2015. The allegations were that North Korean soldiers had snuck over the DMZ and planted mines along South Korean patrol routes. The attack is the first of its kind since 1967, and it has given the “hawkish” South Korean Defense Ministry the political pull it has needed to resume its operations along the DMZ borders.

Previous uses of such operations in South Korea included usage of national Trot Music (think 1950’s FoxTrot) by artists such as Jang Yoon-jung and Park Hyun-bin, the use of more “vintage” music styles was thought of as the most effective as more modern and rhythmic pop music would have been too overwhelming for a North Korean population who are, to put it bluntly, a little bit behind on the grand timeline.South-Korea-to-resume-loudspeaker-broadcasts-on-North-Korea-border

But this is now changed, mostly due to more and more foreign cultural influences and products finding its way to North Korea through smuggling, often by illegally downloaded Music Albums and TV shows on USB’s, the rejuvenation of the music operation will include modern K-Pop, Korean Pop Music, and its already suspected that corporate created bands such as Girl’s Generation, Rainbow, Wonder Girls etc. Will be used to broadcast across the DMZ. And if you’re familiar with the music you might notice these are all girly bands. The reasoning for this, according to an official from  the Joint Chiefs of Staff is that the North Korean soldiers would be exposed to the revealing outfits and provocative dances by the performers while the North Korean population would see a flaunting of South Korean prosperity and freedom.

And the new operation wouldn’t be limited to just sound-systems, but also mobile broadcasting trucks able to force transmissions into TV’s and radios in the north,

and projectors along the border in order to display
K-pop music videos, South Korean Soap Operas and Japanese Dramas and Romance shows such as Tatta Hitotsu no koi, Stairway to Heaven, Winter Sonata and more.

The Korean made shows often displays a combination of Korean market prosperity and Confucian values with messages about respect for elders, filial piety, family-orientedness, and conventional “Asian moral values”, values and ideals that are incidentally also broadcasted by the North Korean regime and fronted by North Korean propaganda.

The thinking behind using these shows is that the similar values and messages in the shows would already be familiar to the North Korean population, with one key difference, the South Korean shows display wealth, ambition, job opportunities and education facilities that are not available to North Koreans.

Which makes it no surprise that some of the most popular TV shows to smuggle into North Korea on hidden USB’s are South Korean dramas such as the popular show Dr. Stranger.

And thanks to the South Korean government program “Hallyu”, Korean Wave,
state programs which includes industrial deregulation, legal slave contracts, government subsidies, tax incentives and import regulations promotes the growth of South Korean cultural exports in order to gain a greater cultural influence on the continent and thus gives the added bonus of a so called “360° push”, with North Koreans being surrounded by countries all consuming South Korean cultural products.

The term first became know in the 1950s when the government under Park hung Chee’s presidency introduced screen quotas to limit the number of foreign films to prevent competition between foreign blockbusters and national movies. The quotas was forcibly removed in 1986 but after the Asian financial crisis in 1998 the regulations were back, first by restricting the imports of Japanese cultural products such as manga, anime, j-pop and action movies, and then by letting the newly formed Ministry of Culture put fort legislation that increased budgets to fund 300 new cultural industry departments in colleges and universities. The entertainment industry was also heavily deregulated, the creation of slave contracts in which a young up and coming artist signed contracts lasting years or decades and restricting their personal and social life, became legal.

This in addition to the South Korean government providing massive funds ranging in the billions to all of its entertainment companies, and with the 5 largest ones, SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, FNC Entertainment and Starship Entertainment receiving subsidies totaling in up to 1 trillion SKW (nearly 1 billion dollars), have ensured a steady and incremental growth of the South Korean entertainment industry, and its national cultural exports.

And with close monetary ties between the entertainment industry and the government, its hardly surprising that much of the music produced by these companies follow certain rules and styles, young attractive females, displays of wealth, luxury items, revealing clothing and provocative dancing to rhythmic tunes. One might even suspect the government of occasionally making orders of specific songs and videos from the industry, as one example here will show;

In March 2013 the North Korean regime acknowledged the newly elected South Korean president  Park Geun-hye by making sexist comments and referring to her inauguration as a “venomous swish of her skirt” (a sexist reference to a meddling woman), in which just afterwards the K-pop band Girl’s Day made a comeback in June 2013 by re-releasing their first album with a more sexed up promotion and a new addition, a highly controversial and very sexual song called Female President.

A song and music video which was later one of the most smuggled files on the USB trade-routes across the border. The song features lyrics such as;

Our country’s president is now a female
So what’s the big deal?
Why can’t girls do it first?

And the typical recipe with revealing clothing, fancy cars, luxury items,
sexual innuendo and butts, dancing, twerking, jiggling butts, and lots of it.

The group is owned by Dream Tea Entertainment, not surprisingly one of the entertainment corporations receiving major governmental benefits under the “Hallyu” programs.

In fact, if you take a look at the typical k-pop videos and songs that is being used in the operation, you’l notice certain similar themes among them all:

The luxury items, the women in power,

The swinging hips and the shaking butts, all the butts, everywhere, in every single video with every band out there. Trust me, i had to clarify but apparently just like the Japanese have an obsession with breasts, so to do the South Koreans seem to like Legs and Butts.
And quite frankly, i ain’t complaining.

But whether or not the ongoing psy-op is actually working does remain to be seen, but South Korean TV shows are one of the most smuggled products entering the North Korean population, and after the landmine attack, the South Koreans demanded an apology from the North Korean regime, and blasted k-pop non-stop for two weeks in august, which actually led the North Korean regime to issue an apology for the landmine attack, and taking responsibility.

And seeing how you are more likely to run into a unicorn than ever hearing the North Koreans apologize for anything, it certainly gives reason to believe that K-Pop may be the way to go.
